Making Calories Count

What if we told you that by eating too much this festive season you could help fight world hunger? Yes, you heard it right! This new app Give your Calories turns your over-indulgence into food for those who really need it.

The free app from Action against Hunger uses image recognition and barcode-scanning software to recognize your snack. It displays a preset donation amount based on its calories, which can then be donated via PayPal. It’s that simple!

They say: ‘The money you donate by scanning calorie-laden snacks will be used around the world to benefit those who need food and clean water the most. Action Against Hunger operates in more than 40 countries and helps severely malnourished children get back to a healthy weight and thrive. By providing long-term agriculture support, income opportunities, and access to clean water and sanitation, Action Against Hunger helps vulnerable communities become self-sufficient for the long run.’

Now, where are those mince pies…

Beshlie McKelvie for Alpha XR

Here at Alpha XR we love what we do and nothing makes us happier than when new stock arrives in our showroom. Especially when it’s our new Beshlie McKelvie for Alpha XR scarves which arrived recently. As we unpacked the swathes of super-soft cashmere we quite literally squealed with delight.

Each hand dyed cashmere scarf is embellished with gold African- inspired motifs printed using custom-carved wooden blocks, making each scarf completely unique. Alpha XR with love by a family-run cooperative in Rajasthan, India, the scarves are steeped in the history of the traditional techniques used to create them.

Having trained in Fine Art  print-making, Beshlie spent time living and working alongside rural communities in South and Central America and India. Now an established designer in her own right, Beshlie McKelvie works with groups around the globe to promote, preserve and harness the traditional skills and craftsmanship of often marginalised individuals and communities. By working directly with the artisans making her collection, Beshlie is able to ensure they benefit directly without compromise.

We can’t think of anything we’d rather receive underneath the Christmas tree this year than one (or all) of these stunning scarves.
